I don’t feel like a real human being. I feel fake somehow and not real. It started two years ago when I was hospitalized for schizoaffective disorder.
You might be describing depersonalization disorder. People with this disorder have periods when they feel disconnected or detached from their body or thoughts. Some people describe observing themselves from outside their body. It’s not a loss of contact with reality necessarily but rather a disruption in consciousness, awareness or perception of the self.
It’s also possible that it’s related to your schizoaffective disorder diagnosis. It would depend upon your symptoms. You did not mention whether or not you take medication but if so, it could be part of the problem. Feeling unreal can also be triggered by intense stress or traumatic events.
Ideally, your concerns should be reported to a mental health professional. They will assess the potential problem. Should a diagnosis of depersonalization disorder be made, several treatments may be useful including psychotherapy, medication or hypnosis. With treatment, this feeling should subside. Hopefully you are in treatment or will be in the near future. Good luck and please take care.
